Bollywood Superstar Sanjay Dutt Arrested

Star Sanjay Dutt surrendered before a Mumbai court Thursday to begin serving time in jail due to a weapons conviction linked to a deadly terror attack in the city in 1993. Supreme Court sentenced Dutt to five years in prison in March for illegal possession of weapons that were supplied by mafia bosses that were linked to the attack, where 257 people were killed in the Indian financial capital. The 53-year-old actor served 18 months in jail before being released on bail in the year 2007 pending an appeal, so he is forced to spend the next 3 1/2 years behind bars. His prison sentence was been changed to 5 years rather than 6 years from the Supreme Court. Earlier this month, Dutt’s plea seeking review of its judgment on his jail term was rejected by the court. He was arrested for possession of an automatic rifle and a pistol that were supplied to him by men subsequently involved in the Mumbai bombings. Dutt arrived in court on Thursday with his wife, Manyata, and filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt. Several close friends of his also stood by him at court. Many cameramen, photographers and fans crowded outside his house and the courtroom. At the court, Dutt was forced to stay in his car before arriving to ask the crowds to move.Despite the long-drawn trial over the bombings, Dutt’s Bollywood career has largely expanded over the past 20 years. He gained enormous popularity for a series of Hindi films in which he played the role of a reformed thug who follows the teachings of Mohandas Gandhi, who believed in nonviolence. Currently, Dutt is involved in projects worth at least $20 million, according to estimates of industry.Dutt has stated that he knew nothing about the bombing plot and that he requested the guns so he could protect his family — his mother was Muslim and his father Hindu — after receiving threats during the religious riots that occurred before the bombings. At the time, the bombings were seen as the world's worst terrorist attack, with 13 bombs exploding all over Mumbai in just 2 hours, and explosives were even packed in cars. In addition to the deceased, over 720 people were injured in the terrorist attack.

I, personally, have remorse for Sanjay Dutt. Not only is he one of the top actors in Bollywood, but he has also gone through some tough times throughout his life. I must say that it was wrong of him to do drugs while he was in high school, and he just got worse after his mother died, but he decided to change himself after that and go to rehab, where he met his future wife. They had a child before his wife died of a brain tumour, and he lost custody of his daughter due to some conflict with his in-laws. He then returned to Bollywood in the 90's, and married another woman but then got divorced. After spending 18 months in jail, he married his longtime girlfriend in the year 2008 and became the father of twins 2 years later. I do feel upset because Sanjay Dutt has not experienced the happiest life, there have been many deaths in his life. All he wanted to do was protect his family so there would not be any death, but apparently it's wrong if he is trying to do that. I can understand the cops' side of thinking that he is possibly linked with the terrorists by him having guns, but I feel they should not be so hard on him when he is telling the truth. I feel this is wrong treatment, he never wanted to hurt anyone and he never meant to hurt anyone. Is there any harm in doing whatever you can to protect your family and to make sure that they are safe at a dangerous time? I don't think so, but I will admit there are better ways of protection than possessing illegal weapons.
